Weekly Greeting

May 4 , 2008
Dear Parishioners,

Today is something like a great spiritual Trifecta!

First, Ascension Thursday is celebrated on this 7th Sunday of Easter. The decision to move the celebration to Sunday is made for practical reason: since Ascension Thursday is not a civil holiday, many Catholics find it burdensome to celebrate Mass, for it still is a day of obligation. Now, more Catholics can celebrate this liturgy. This decision underscores the importance of Ascension Thursday for me. Together, Easter, Ascension and Pentecost proclaim the magnificence of God.

Then we have our Bishop, Bishop Leonard Blair, here at the 9:30 Eucharist, to dedicate our altar and bless our sanctuary. The 5th Preface of Easter says it so well with these words, “As He gave Himself into Your hands for our salvation, He showed Himself to be the priest, the altar, and the lamb of sacrifice.”

And today in this rite of dedication of our altar, we are reminded that we are also a spiritual altar. St Polycarp exhorts widows to lead a life of holiness, for “they are God’s altar”. And Gregory the Great states the same in these words: “What is God’s altar if not the souls of those who lead good lives?...Indeed, the heart of the just is said to be the altar of God.” May this day of dedication be a day that truly renews us.

Thirdly, the young boys and girls among us, who have spent this year learning about the Lord who becomes present at our altar under the form of bread and wine and who have been preparing themselves to receive Jesus, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, will receive the Lord for the very first time this Sunday afternoon.

Come, let us join together to give thanks for the goodness of this day.

Love and peace,

Fr. Phil
