What is Adventures in Faith?
Adventures in Faith (AIF) is the Sandusky Catholic Community’s name for lifelong faith formation. Because we recognize that learning is an on-going process, the Sandusky parishes are offering a multitude of experiences for people to continue to grow in their faith. We will gather together to learn about our faith, to share our faith, to engage in our faith, to reflect on our faith, and ultimately to apply our faith to everyday living.

What is the idea behind AIF?
The idea is to provide opportunities for everyone to learn and live their faith. The ultimate goal is to help each and every person to engage more fully in their Catholic faith.

Who is involved?
Every member of every age is involved: young and old, singles and couples, children and teens, families, young adults, older adults, and vintage adults – EVERYBODY!

Why everybody, why not just the kids?
Because it is in the households of the parish that faith is shared everyday. The CHURCH is the people of God, gathered and living wherever they are. The church is indeed the people of God living in their own homes and neighborhoods, attending their workplaces and schools, going to the shopping malls and grocery stores. The church, as the people of God – gathers in all kinds of places. Basically, the church gathers every night for supper. And secondarily, it assembles at the parish Church to celebrate Eucharist together as a community.

Why is AIF needed?
For many Catholics, formal religious education ended sometime during the junior high and high school years. Others are just beginning to experience the faith they have committed to. ADVENTURES IN FAITH offers an opportunity to learn about our faith, to grow in our understanding of the church and to find meaning in our lives. All of this is accomplished by sharing with members of our faith community.

A Commond Misconception:

"I'm an adult, I don't need any more religious formation!"

This is a common feeling among many Catholic adults. Religious formation for adults is imperative for their own growth. Many adults believe that the Catholic Church assumes its members are only asked to participate in faith formation as children, but this is not true. Many adult Catholics are searching for answers in life and for a deeper faith, but don’t feel there is a way to find these things. In addition, for most adult Catholics, the last time any Christian formal instruction in a topic such as morality, was fifth grade. As adults, we are looking for a better understanding of faith and decision-making that is at an adult level. Adventures in Faith will provide opportunities for every person to grow and learn in their faith, not just the kids.

How does AIF work?
When participating in an event, we are greater participators when preparation has taken place. Faith formation happens the same way. So, Adventures in Faith has designed faith gatherings for all people to attend to help prepare everyone for participation in an event. After participating in an event, it is recognized that reflection on the event allows for a deeper appreciation of the experience.

From early Church history and custom, the Mass was celebrated on the tombs of martyrs, either in the Catacombs, or on altars that contained relics of martyrs.
St. Mary’s church has two reliquaries and an altar stone in a special box in the center of the altar.

The Cylinder Reliquary
The relics in this sealed receptacle come from two martyred saints. These relics were presented to St. Mary’s by +Samuel Cardinal Stritch on September 30, 1930. This was the date and ceremony that involved the consecration of the Church.

The Cross Reliquary
Donated to St. Mary’s by the Pastor, Fr. Philip Feltman, this reliquary contains relics from eleven saints, five of whom were martyrs.

The Altar Stone
The box in the altar also contains an altar stone. This stone is documented and contains the relics of two martyrs.

The nurse kept the babies alive and they were baptized by St. Ovidius and educated in the Christian faith.
With the outbreak of the persecution under Emperor Hadrian, the girls were condemned by their own father. Liberata suffered martyrdom on the cross, around 140.
In art, Liberata is presented crucified and is invoked to drive away melancholy thoughts and to summon peace and serenity.

St. Optatus - Bishop

De Viris Illustribus. The treatise stresses the need for unity and is conciliatory in tone, but it criticized Donatist teachings on Baptism, and stresses that the Church cannot be limited to Africa, but is “catholic.”

An army of barbarians ravaging part of Gaul plundered the city of Rheims. Nicasius, the Bishop, had foretold this calamity to his flock in consequence of a vision, and urged them to prepare for the visitation by works of penance. When he saw the enemy at the gates and in the streets he went from door to door encouraging all to patience and constancy. When the people asked him whether they should yield or fight to the end he replied, “Let us aide the mercy of God and pray for our enemies. I am ready to give myself for my people.”
Standing at the door of his church, trying to save the lives of the townspeople, he exposed himself to the swords of the infidels, who cut off his head. St. Florentius, his deacon, and St. Jucundus, his lector, were massacred by his side.
